Motorcycle Officials

Volunteer Motorcycle Officials assist with the cycle segment of an event, ensuring that competitors are safe and not gaining an unfair advantage.

Overview

Motorcycle Officials are generally present at open water events (although can also be found at any event where there is a road cycle segment) to help ensure competitor safety whilst out on the bike, and to discourage rule infringements such as drafting and dangerous riding.

British Triathlon has worked with the National Escort Group (NEG) to develop a course specifically designed to train volunteer Motorcycle Officials for their role at events.

There is a three-step process to becoming a qualified British Triathlon Motorcycle Official as outlined below:

All Motorcycle Officials are required to hold an advanced riding qualification (such as an IAM or RoSPA qualification) before applying to complete the course.

To apply to become a volunteer Motorcycle Official please complete the application found in the 'Find A Course' link, and email your supporting documentation to officials@britishtriathlon.org.

Insurance

When acting as a Motorcycle Official you will be covered by the British Triathlon fleet insurance policy, on a fully comprehensive basis.

To ensure that you are covered by this policy it is vital that the details relating to your bike (e.g. model, engine size, registration number) are held by British Triathlon and that either you or the Event Organiser complete the Event Registration Form prior to an event taking place.  The completion of this form enables us to confirm with our insurance company that you are attending an event on behalf of British Triathlon - without this form being completed before the event takes place we cannot guarantee that you will be fully covered.

You can view an overview of the insurance details here, and if you would like further information about the insurance policy please contact British Triathlon.

Event Organisers

If you require a Motorcycle Official, you can request this at the point of registering your event via the Event Organisers System. The relevant Regional Motorcycle Coordinator will allocate Motorcycle Official(s) to your event, depending on availability. Once your Official(s) has been allocated, you must complete and submit the Event Registration Form as detailed above.

This form must be submitted to events@britishtriathlon.org, ideally at least a week in advance of the event - it cannot be accepted after the event has taken place.

Expenses

As volunteers, fully qualified Motorcycle Officials are entitled to receive reimbursement for expenses incurred for attending events, which are claimed directly from the Event Organiser. The British Triathlon Officials Expenses Policy can be found in the Officiating Resources section.
