Triathlon England Notes from a novice

Triathlon England

Helping everyone to achieve their personal triathlon challenges

Where Am I?

Notes from a novice

Welcome to the first instalment of ‘Notes from a novice’.

It’s pretty much what it says on the tin, as I tell the story of my first triathlon. Training, racing, the lack of the aforementioned training and fitting the triathlon journey alongside a busy social and work life – all things experienced  triathletes seem to handle with ease, but I wouldn’t call myself a triathlete quite yet.

Who am I? To introduce myself, I work for British Triathlon and therefore know a fair bit about how the elites go about their business and have the enviable task of being able to talk to the likes of the Brownlee brothers and Helen Jenkins about their world-class performances on a regular basis.

I won’t lie, I come from a team sports background rather than individual and the prospect of triathlon - relying a little more on your individual motivations rather than your teammates ‘encouragement’ - does seem a bit daunting.

When you stand on the edge of the Serpentine in Hyde Park and watch our top British athletes and the support staff giving their all to ensure success, you can’t help but be inspired to take up the challenge.

However, I am booked in for triathlon number one, so the prospect of a 400m swim, 20km bike and 5km run awaits me! Over the next 12 weeks, I will try and give and honest breakdown of how the training is going and how some familiar faces in the triathlon world have given some hints and tips along the way.

Notes from a novice will be published on the Triathlon England website, as I plan to tap into the expertise amongst the Home Nations to help me achieve my triathlon challenge!
