Enabling excellence whilst delivering opportunities for everyone
As we head into an Olympic year, British Triathlon’s Olympic Performance Group manager, Malcolm Brown, summed up his highlights and thoughts on 2012.
He said: “There have been a lot of highlights throughout this year. I was delighted with Helen (Jenkins’) level of consistency over the whole season, which culminated in her Series victory and lifting the world title. That can only provide inspiration to other female triathletes that are in the team, and those yet to get into it.
“From a personal coaching point of view, 2011 has been fantastic seeing Alistair (Brownlee) winning every race that he was able to finish off, and Jonny breathing down his neck, never missing the podium and winning the ITU World Sprint title.
“Winning the team relay world title in Lausanne was also very special.
“These are the obvious highlights but equally for me was the willingness of all athletes to contribute to the team GB spirit in what is an individual sport. We have had some challenges this year, but the way the team has worked together and achieved what we have achieved has been fantastic.”
Looking ahead to 2012, which is now just days away, Brown added: “The London 2012 Games presents a fantastic opportunity for six of our athletes to participate in an Olympics in a home country.
“I’m looking forward to providing an environment, along with my colleagues in British Triathlon’s Olympic Performance Group to enable them to fulfil their potential – whatever that is.
“Based on the performances this season, we know that on a given day, certain athletes have got a really good chance of achieving their ambition in the Olympic Games.
“Sport is uncertain, but I think this group of athletes have got the potential to do what it takes.”
Britain’s Olympic team will be decided by early June, and will launch into Hyde Park’s Serpentine Lake on 4 and 7 August 2012 for what could be the most memorable events of the Games.
