Triathlon leadership take part in International Leadership Programme
British Triathlon Chief Executive, Zara Hyde Peters OBE and Director for Major and National Events, Ian Braid recently undertook their third module of the UK Sport’s International Leadership Programme at Twickenham Stadium.
Following the successful second module in Lausanne at the end of 2011 where the group met with some of the most influential administrators within international sport, last week’s event focused on developing participants’ skills and competencies in operating more effectively in the international sport environment.
The first day of the workshop explored the importance of personal effectiveness and communicating with impact. Philippa Davies, a qualified psychologist specialising in communication skills who has worked with senior politicians and business leaders, delivered a number of practical and interactive training sessions to the group together with Irene Nathan, an experienced personal brand and image consultant.
Day 2 of the workshop, delivered by Russell Harlow from TMA World, focused on building cultural intelligence, exploring cultural differences and providing participants with practical advice on communication and approach when engaging with individuals from different cultures.
Zara Hyde-Peters, Chief Executive of British Triathlon, said: "The recent ILP session on cross-cultural working delivered some of the most practical tools yet, further developing our skills to work in the international sporting environment. It is always interesting to understand how others perceive us; this session gave us both the insights and the practical tools we can use outside of the course to develop our own strategy for effective international communication."
Launched in 2006, the ILP is one of several UK Sport people development programmes and is part of UK Sport’s commitment to ensure that the UK is able to contribute to the development and governance of international sport. British Triathlon has already celebrated three successful graduates from the programme. Jem Lawson, British Triathlon Director for Triathlon England, Tom Chambers, British Triathlon Director for triathlonscotland and in 2010 Chris Kitchen, Director for Performance have all graduated from the UK Sport initiative.
