Dijkstra strikes double gold at Youth Olympics

Published:

Ben Dijkstra won another Youth Olympic gold in Nanjing as part of the Team Europe I Mixed Relay. Britain’s Sian Rainsley won silver as part of Team Europe III.

After his individual gold medal win on Monday, Dijkstra teamed up with Germany’s Kristin Ranwig, Denmark’s Emil Deleuran Hansen and France’s Emilie Morier to win team gold.

Each athlete completed a 250m swim, 6.6km bike ride and 1.8km run before handing over to their teammate. Dijkstra had to overhaul Team Europe III’s Lehmann Bence (HUN) to secure the gold medal.

He said: “It was a great race. The teamwork was great, with Emil, Kristin and Emilie, and even though we are from different countries we have each others flags on.”

Sian Rainsley took on the opening leg for Team Europe III before handing over to Italian, Spanish and Hungarian team mates. The team finished 13 seconds behind the gold medal winners and ahead of the bronze medal winning Oceania team.
