London

Back in the lab!

Published:

Over 20 London coaches were back in the Human Performance Lab last Wednesday (19 November) for the final workshop in a two-part series about nutrition in triathlon hosted by GSK and Triathlon England London Region.

Ana Anton-Solanas, Sports Dietitian at GSK opened the evening with a presentation about weight management, energy restriction and bone health.

Tim George, Level 2 coach, said: “Nutrition is a subject which when discussed over a short time frame normally has two problems to contend with 1) it is incredibly complex and 2) the effects vary from individual to individual.”

Former GB Olympic paddler and performance nutritionist, Lucy Wainwright from the English Institute of Sport gave further insight into the practical application of weight management strategies   within triathlon.

Coaches were then split in to groups to analyse the eating and training patterns of a number of athlete case studies.

Tim said: “The use of real world examples highlighted the potential issues but also gave a chance to talk through solutions. Overall two Wednesday evenings that were highly informative.”

Maddy Johnson, Serpentine Triathlon, currently studying for her level 2 triathlon coaching qualification, agreed: “It's been informative and a great insight in to how to individualise nutrition for triathlete training.”

Tim's closing remarks were: “These two evenings with GSK were brilliant for providing a great overview of the different considerations when providing advice, as coaches.”

The overall success of both evenings means that the London region may run more workshops like this in future...watch this space!
