Standard Distance sees extensive success for Great Britain’s Age-Group athletes in Lisbon

Published:

The third and final day of racing action at the 2016 ETU Triathlon European Championships signalled the turn of the British Standard Distance athletes to shine. Following up on the extensive medal haul from Friday’s Sprint Distance races, seven Gold’s headlined a total podium return of 32 medals on Sunday

On the way to winning Gold in the F20-24 category and stepping up one spot from her 2015 Silver, Alice Jenkins also achieved the feat of being the fastest female athlete across all categories. Her winning margin of more than two minutes was a reflection of the form she has already shown in 2016, which also included winning the British Duathlon Championships at the Windsor Duathlon.

Edward Castro (M25-29) continued his medal winning consistency on the way to being the fastest British athlete of the day – falling just nine seconds short of the time set by Italy’s Bruno Pasqualini (40-44). Having won the European Championships over the Sprint distance in Geneva last year, Edward now has the double of European Gild medals over both Sprint and Standard distances to add to his British Triathlon Age Group Athlete of the Year award from 2015.

Anastasia Bowler (F18-19), Jo Phillips (F40-44), Andy Bourne (M55-59), Sandra Abrams (F70-74) and Nigel Dimmock (M75-79) were the other British Gold medal winners in Lisbon

Well over 300 British Age-Groupers took part on Sunday including BBC Breakfast presenter Louise Minchin who had a quick turnaround, as she was back on the Manchester TV studio sofa bright and early on Monday morning.

Next up for the British team is the ITU Duathlon World Championships, which take place this coming weekend in Aviles, Spain. Having won 21 medals in 2015 when the championships were held in Adelaide, Australia, the chances of an even greater return at a venue much closer to home are high. Look out for our event preview later this week.
