Where Am I?

London 2012 Olympic Games just six months away

Today marks six months until the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games on 27 July 2012, and Olympic Performance Manager, Malcolm Brown is confident that Britain’s best triathletes still have plenty of time to prepare.

The triathlon events take place in Hyde Park on 4 and 7 August, with large crowds expected to take advantage of the largely unticketed venue and the genuine prospect of a medal being won by a British triathlete.

Brown said: “Six months to go can be considered to be very close. You can think that there’s a lot to be done, and ask whether we have got enough time. On the other hand, you can consider it to be a huge amount of time, and that there’s a lot that can be done. I prefer the latter.”

He added: “People have plenty of time to work on their deficiencies, raise their game and fully commit to their goals. For me, six months is a long time.”

With Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee alongside Helen Jenkins having achieved the British Triathlon qualification criteria, Britain is hopeful of adding a further three athletes to the team following the conclusion of the qualification period at the end of May. Selections will be announced by the British Olympic Association in June.

Key events in Sydney, San Diego and Madrid offer opportunities to qualify for TeamGB, with the first round of the ITU World Triathlon Series taking place in Sydney 14-15 April to start the season.

Speaking from a training camp in Lanzarote, World Champion Alistair Brownlee said: “With six months to go, you want everything to go right, and to be able to focus completely on getting to the start line in the best possible shape.”

Helen Jenkins, also world champion and training in Lanzarote added: “I like to take each day as it comes and focus on doing my next training session to the best of my ability, but milestones are an important reminder that the Olympics are getting closer and closer.”

Triathlon will be one of the few free-to-view sports during the London 2012 Olympic Games, with much of Hyde Park open and unticketed during the events. The women’s triathlon takes place on Saturday 4 Aug at 9am, and the men’s event is on Tuesday 7 Aug at 11..30am.
