Cheshire churns out duathlon champions

Closing the curtain on 2015, the sun shone on Oulton Park as the battle commenced for Triathlon England – National Duathlon Championship titles.

Carl Avery (M25-29) was first male across the line to take the title in 1:38:24. This marked the second time Avery had successfully competed on the course this year, having won the Oulton Park Sprint Duathlon back in March.

Avery said: “It’s a big relief to take the win after all the hard training. I really didn't expect it.
It’s the first time I’ve competed in this particular event and has set me up nicely for the ITU World Championships in Australia in a couple of week’s time.”

Daniel Jenkin (M25-29) followed Avery home, finishing just over a minute adrift in 1:39:34. Third over the line was RAF Tri Club’s Paul Vernon (M35-39) in 1:40:05.

It was Naomi Eaton (W30-34) who was awarded the honour of being the first female Triathlon England Champion in Oulton Park this weekend.

Despite being pipped to the post by Welsh Triathlon’s Ellie Campbell, Eaton was champion of her age-group; finishing in 1:57:52. Vicky Smith (W25-29) was close behind in 1:57:54, with Angela Hannon taking the W45-49 title in 1:59:00.

Eaton commented: “I’m very happy to be the first English winner and take the National Duathlon Title for my age-group. It was hard to tell where you were in the field whilst out on the course, and as it was my first standard distance race, it’s even more surprising!

“It was good fun – a really nice course and well organised.”
