Published:

British Triathlon has issued the following statement after the extremely sad death of Paul Gallihawk.

British Triathlon extend their condolences to the family and friends of Paul Gallihawk, 34, who died whilst competing at the Ocean Lake Triathlon in Leybourne Lakes, Larkfield, Kent on Saturday 29 August.

The event was cancelled following the incident to allow emergency services to focus on their efforts to find Mr Gallihawk. We are all deeply saddened to hear the confirmation that he has died.

Tragedies are unfortunately inevitable in any sport, but the loss of a relatively young participant in triathlon, a sport often seen as an exemplar in its ability to promote physical wellbeing and fitness, is a shock to us all.

British Triathlon permitted over 1200 events this year, each organised according to specific quality and safety standards. The BTF has clear health and safety guidelines that are adhered to by organisers to ensure that they provide a safe, enjoyable and quality experience to competitors.

Mr Gallihawk was raising funds for the King’s College Hospital in London. Any donations can be made here: https://www.justgiving.com/Paul-Gallihawk. We were extremely saddened to hear of his death.
