Rhiannon Henry retires

Published:

Three-time paralympian, Rhiannon Henry, 28, has announced her retirement from elite sport. The former swimmer was part of the Great Britain Paratriathlon team, and won the only ITU World Paratriathlon Event that she competed in.

Rhiannon joined the Great Britain Paratriathlon team last autumn as one of three visually impaired female athletes training for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. With Alison Patrick and Melissa Reid having won PT5 gold and silver at the ITU World Championships last summer, Rhiannon provided further depth to the squad and delivered on her potential by winning her first ITU World Paratriathlon event in South Africa in March.

British Paratriathlon Head Coach, Jonathon Riall, said: “Rhiannon’s retirement is a loss to the British Paratriathlon programme. With her background as a successful Paralympic swimmer and Welsh Commonwealth Games cyclist, she had huge potential to be successful as a triathlete.”

He added: “I wish Rhiannon well and would like to thank her for her contribution to paratriathlon, and congratulate her on a fantastic career.”

Rhiannon won double swimming bronze at the Athens 2004 Paralympic Games, and represented ParalympicsGB in 2008 and 2012. She rode for Wales at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
