Sprinters chased titles at Belvoir Castle

Published:

It was all hands on deck at Belvoir Castle for the Triathlon England National Sprint Distance Championships last weekend.

The sun was shining as 229 triathletes toed the line in the Castle’s Leicestershire grounds on Sunday (17 May), eager to get a good start and make a bid for a national title.

It was Racetime Events’ Carl Shaw (M35-39) who was the first to cross the line, to finish in 1:05:48 following the 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run. Shaw went one better than last weekend, when he clocked the second quickest time of the day at the British Sprint Triathlon Championships.

There was clear daylight between himself and second fastest racer, Sean Wylie (M-U20), who finished 3 and a half minutes adrift the leader in 1:09:17. Duncan Shea-Simonds (M40-44) was close behind in 1:09:19.

Oxford University Student, Sophie Saller (W20-24), was far and away the leading lady on Sunday. Stopping the clock at 1:10:54, her closest opposition was women’s U20 triathlete, Kate Curran who finished in 1:17:29. Claire Vallance repeated her third-fastest time from 2014 to take the women’s 35-39 title in 1:17:44.

The next opportunity to race for a national title will be at Deva Triathlon on June 14 for the Triathlon England National Standard Distance Triathlon Championships.
