Duathletes head north to take on Stirling Duathlon

Published:

This weekend, some of Scotland’s most picturesque scenery will provide the backdrop for age-group athletes vying for a spot on the Great Britain Age-Group Team.

Stirling Duathlon provides the second opportunity to qualify for the 2015 ITU Sprint Distance Duathlon World Championships in Adelaide, after the initial places were decided last weekend at Clumber Park.

The first 5km run will begin under the shadow of the iconic Wallace Monument, within the grounds of Stirling University. A 21km bike will follow, before the final 5km battle for the line on foot.

The standard distance race at acts separately as the triathlonscotland Scottish Duathlon Championships.

The university is widely known for its sporting prowess, being designated as Scotland's University for Sporting Excellence. Grant Sheldon, UK Sport Lottery World-Class Performance Programme member, is amongst those based there for training.

The Great Britain Age-Group Team have witnessed great success in past championships, collecting 12 gold, 4 silver and 10 bronze medals from the Pontevedra ITU Sprint Distance Duathlon Championships in 2014.

Jez Coz, Great Britain Age-Group Team Manager for Adelaide, said, “For a number of years now, Stirling Duathlon has been building a great reputation for itself as a great race and a really testing qualifier for the World Championships.

It's vital that we have a qualifying race that far north and in recent years it has meant that the team has benefited from some strong Scottish duathletes qualifying and representing their nation with pride.

“As the second qualifier of three places for the sprint distance team are being snapped up with many having been taken at last weekend's opening qualifier at Clumber Park.
Without doubt there will be athletes on the start line this weekend anticipating the chance to wear the coveted GB kit.  I look forward to yet another fantastic Stirling Duathlon.”

The final opportunity to qualify for the team will be at the Stockton Duathlon on April 26.

For the first time at this event, live timing at Stirling Duathlon will be hosted on the British Triathlon website, allowing you to follow the action as it happens. Visit here in order to access it.
