Top ten finishes in Cape Town
British triathletes, Tim Don and Non Stanford both recorded top ten finishes in their season opener at the 2012 Cape Town ITU Sprint Triathlon African Cup on Sunday 19 February.
In the men’s race, the opening 750m swim did little to separate the pack, before the technically demanding 20km bike course. Denmark’s
Jens Toft managed to breakaway entering T2 with a 40-second lead, but was soon chased down by the rest of the pack that was being led by British athlete
Tim Don.
On the run, South Africa’s Richard Murray pushed the pace and kept his lead to the finish, crossing the line in 54.48. Tim finished less than a minute behind in eighth place and a finishing time of 55.29.
Tim who is part of the UK Sport Lottery funded British Triathlon World Class Programme’s 2012 squad, remains focussed on the opening race of the ITU World Triathlon Series in Sydney on 14 April, which signifies the first opportunity this season to achieve British Triathlon’s Olympic selection criteria.
In the women’s race,
Non Stanford finished in tenth place delivering a consistent performance across the swim, bike and run legs.
The race was won by another South African, Carlyn Fischer in a time of 01:01.21, with Non finishing in 01:03.05. A key positive for Non coming out of the race was that the Welsh athlete ran the third fastest run split of the day, recording 18 minutes for the final 5km.
Catherine Pickthall, the Loughborough-based 27 year-old former elite swimmer, who has been training in South Africa in the build up to the event finished in 18th place with a time of 01:08.27.
