‘This Girl Can’, say women of Norwich

Published:

The University of East Anglia (UEA) Sports Park in Norwich organised a women’s only Go Tri event on June 26th in conjunction with Sport England’s This Girl Can campaign.

GO TRI is a branch of Triathlon England, designed to give triathlon beginners a low-cost, easy- access route into the sport.

The event involved the women running 2km on the track before jumping onto static spin bikes for 5km. They then finished with another 2k run. The bikes were housed in a room next to track so transition was quick and simple. The females simply turned up either at 8pm or 8.45pm to enter one of the two waves.

Overall, a total of 40 women participated in the event.  Izzy Rothon, Community Sports Officer, said: “All the women really enjoyed it and lots of them loved the fact it was a static bike as they were nervous to get out on the road on a bike.

“This gave them an opportunity to do a Duathlon in a comfortable environment – we’re looking forward to organising our next event!”

British Triathlon coach, Tom Levy, will now be working with the women to improve their skills and increase their confidence in order for them to sign up for another GO TRI event or step up to a sprint distance triathlon for the more confident females.

We would like to thank both Izzy and Tom along with UEA Sports Park for organising and hosting this fantastic opportunity for females to have their first taste of multisport.
