Athletes Phil Holland and Ester Rodriguez are crowned English Champions at this year’s Triathlon England – National Triathlon Championships

Phil Holland and Ester Rodriguez took top honours and were crowned English Champions at this weekend’s annual Triathlon England – National Triathlon Championships, which took place in Emberton Country Park in Buckinghamshire.

The fastest overall course time for the standard distance race was taken by Phil Holland at 1.55.01, closely followed by Harry Springhall who came in second place overall at 1.55.40 and Phil Mellings in third place overall at 1.56.00. The dry and hot weather, as well as the beautiful setting, made for a perfect race event and spectators came out in force to support the athletes.

Phil Holland from Milton Keynes, said: “It’s a fantastic achievement to win this title, especially in this year where triathlon is more widely appreciated, and I’m very happy to have raced well today. I have been doing triathlon for a few years now, but it’s great to have an event such as this in my local area.”

Ester Rodriguez finished as fastest overall winning female at 2.07.55, followed by Hannah Shooter at 2.10.46 and finishing as 3rd overall women was Parys Edwards completing the course at 2.10.59.
Ester Rodriguez said: “I was very surprised to have won the women’s National title. I only started doing triathlon’s two years ago, and love how friendly the sport is and how there is always something for every level. I have always been a swimmer, and moved into cycling and runner later on so I am so pleased to have achieved this result at this great event.”

Harry Springhall, full-time triathlete from Leeds, said: “I’m very happy to receive this award, especially since I have not been able to train fully due to an Achilles heel injury over the past few months.  Today has been a fantastic result and confidence booster going into the remaining races I have planned for the rest of the season. I’m a strong cyclist and runner, so events such as the National Championships plays to my strengths where the course is flat and fast. I am lucky to be able to train with the best athletes in the sport in Leeds, I hope the success of Triathlon throughout 2012 will act as a springboard for more people to get involved and give it a go.”

Jem Lawson, Chair of Triathlon England, said: “The National Triathlon Championships has been a great success and is the perfect way to experience a triathlon event, whether you race or come down as a spectator. We send huge congratulations to all those who entered, and to those who were crowned worthy winners.

“We have been delighted by the positive response we have seen towards the sport over the past few weeks and it shows the sport is growing significantly. The great thing about triathlon is that it’s open to every ability, each discipline - swimming, cycling and running is easily accessible to everyone, and the National Championship series highlights this message, with the range of abilities and reasons people have for participating.”

The sport of triathlon has shown a significant increase in people wanting to take part, and with the Triathlon England - National Triathlon Championships only a few weeks after the Olympic Triathlon, the race proved to be an inspirational event, and the perfect time for people to ‘Give it a Tri’, support participants and kick start their inspiration for themselves.

The annual Triathlon England – National Triathlon Championships hosted by Big Cow Events took place on Sunday 19 August at Emberton Country Park.

The race consisted of a standard distance format, which started with a wave start 1,500m open water swim in the lake at Emberton Country Park, a 40km bike which was a challenging but scenic lap around undulating country roads and then onto a 10km run course, three laps of Emberton Country Park.
