British Triathlon and Triathlon England achieve Intermediate Equality Standard for Sport

Published:

Triathlon England, as part of British Triathlon, is now one of only eight sporting organisations in England to gain Intermediate Equality Standard for Sport status as a result of demonstrating inclusivity in triathlon for people of all abilities to participate in.

The Equality Standard: A Framework for Sport (the Standard) was launched by the UK sports councils in November 2004 to help address the inequalities that exist within the sports sector. It is a framework to guide sports organisations including: governing bodies of sport, county sports partnerships (CSPs), sports councils and national sports organisations towards achieving equality.

Three outcomes have to be met in order to achieve the Intermediate Standard:

Outcome 1 – The organisation can demonstrate that it is implementing and reviewing the equality action plan and has collected updated profile data

Outcome 2 – The organisation’s internal policies and procedures consider the impact on people who share protected characteristics

Outcome 3 – The organisation is working towards increasing the diversity of people participating / using its services

To present their submission, British Triathlon prepared a portfolio of evidence across all areas including equality impact assessments, and case studies of work relating to increasing diversity, including disability, LGBTI and gender. British Triathlon also included data relating specifically to the socio-economic barriers to our sport, as identified in our research.

Reflecting on the achievement, Halima Khan, Director of Diversity and Inclusion Development at Triathlon England said: “Everyone within the team has worked extremely hard in embedding the importance of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion into the heart of our strategy which was noted at the assessment.

“As a sport we want to reach out to as many communities as possible regardless of their ability and background. Our programmes provide great experiences through swim, bike and run and we are keen to demonstrate the inclusivity of our sport for all to participate in, from grassroots to elite level.

Andy Salmon, Chief Executive Officer at British Triathlon added “Over the coming months we will set up a Diversity and Inclusion committee. The job of the committee will be to ensure our action plan is being achieved, raise awareness of and create good governance structures around the area of Diversity and Inclusion both internally and externally. As well as improving our visibility and profile to those untapped markets.

“We want to ensure we are continuously moving forwards as a sport and increasing participation as far and wide as possible through swim, bike and run.”
