Five star Team GB triathlon squad set for Tokyo

Published:

Earlier in June, Alex Yee was announced as the fifth and final member of the triathlon squad that will be representing Team GB in Tokyo this summer for the rearranged 2020 Olympics.

Yee was announced as the second male athlete in the team heading to Tokyo which already comprised of two-time medallist Jonny Brownlee, Georgia Taylor-Brown, Jess Learmonth and Rio 2016 bronze medallist Vicky Holland

The British Olympic Association announced Brownlee, Taylor-Brown, Learmonth and Holland as the first names in the triathlon squad in November 2020 and, following his performances so far in 2021 which included a maiden World Triathlon Championship Series win in Leeds this month, Yee joined the quartet in being named in the squad to travel to Japan.

On being announced as the final member of the team, Yee said: “I don’t think it’s sunk in that I am going to Tokyo as it’s come around so fast since Leeds but I am happy to be part of Team GB. Winning in Leeds was a special moment for me but I know that Tokyo will be a completely different challenge and I just want to put in my best race I can on the day.

“I’ve been with the rest of the team at a heat camp to ensure that we are all ready for anything in Tokyo. My focus now is on getting my processes right and making sure I enjoy all the moments when I am out there because it is my first Games.”

Taylor-Brown, Learmonth and Yee will all be making their Olympic debuts this year, whilst Brownlee and Holland will both be making their third appearances at the Games and share three medals between them from London and Rio.

Looking ahead to the Games, Learmonth commented: "Having found out I was on the team in 2019 it's been a long time coming, but after the team announcement and kitting out I'm really excited now that the Games are almost here.

“To have the chance to race for your country at an Olympics is such a privilege and I can't wait to put all my preparation to the test in Tokyo."

Also debuting in Tokyo will be the mixed relay format of triathlon, meaning that for the first time three triathlon gold medals will be on offer.
