GO TRI Celebrates Hosting One Thousand Events

Published:

As GO TRI hits a momentous milestone – hosting a whopping one thousand events, we felt now was the perfect time to look back and celebrate the success of the programme over the past four years.

GO TRI was launched in 2013 with funding from Sport England, as a way of encouraging more people to get into triathlon and multisport, by making the sport accessible to all. Events are low cost to enter, with manageable distances suitable for beginners and novices looking to improve fitness and triathlon skill and technique.

The very first GO TRI event took place in York, staged by York Triathlon Club, with over 40 people taking part. In that first year, a further 19 GO TRI events took place across the country; a mixture of aquathlon, duathlon and triathlon events, allowing participants a taster of the sport.

The following year saw significant growth, with 69 venues hosting 193 GO TRI events across England. The launch of the GO TRI website, gotri.org, helped to attract more participants, making it easier for people to find local training sessions and events to join, as well as offering useful information, tips and guides to help people get started on their triathlon journey.

We couldn’t have done all of this without the amazing support of GO TRI event organisers, clubs and incredible volunteers. A huge thank you to all – you’re doing an awesome job!

In April 2015, GO TRI launched GO TRI 1000’ an initiative to attract 1000 people to take part in GO TRI events across England over one weekend. Throughout England 36 events took place, with over 1000 people swimming, cycling and running for fun at our events. From April 2015 to April 2016, 406 GO TRI events were registered with British Triathlon.

2016 saw two major milestones, the launch of #YourGOTRI, a campaign aimed at encouraging people to set their own GO TRI swim, cycle and run goals and distances in the lead up to the Rio Olympic Games. And the largest ever GO TRI event took place as part of the #IAmTeamGB celebrations on the inconic Emmerdale set.

2017 is shaping up to be our biggest year yet!  Whilst we’ll see an increase in events in England, GO TRI is now expanding to wider parts of the UK too, with new partnerships being formed, such as our latest partnership with YHA (England & Wales) – exciting times ahead.

Our successes and highlights to date include:

  • 1,000 GO TRI events in the last 4 years
  • 29,000 event starts
  • Over 80 centres delivering GO TRI training sessions
  • Over 30,000 GO TRI gym sessions completed
  • For 77% of people GO TRI was their first engagement with the sport
  • 51% female and 49% male participation
  • 10,000 social media community
  • Over 10,000 people with registered GO TRI accounts on our website – taking advantage of the guides, hints, tips and of course joining in with our events and training sessions!

We couldn’t have done all of this without the amazing support of GO TRI event organisers, clubs and incredible volunteers. A huge thank you to all – you’re doing an awesome job!
