Jon Shaw – 2019 Technical Official of the Year

Published:

With the 2020 Triathlon England Awards now open for nominations, we got in touch with our 2019 winners to hear what it meant to them to be nominated and win.

“I’m Jon Shaw and I was awarded the Technical Official of the Year award in 2019 by Triathlon England.

“Having only been a Technical Official for two seasons, the awards weren’t really on my radar as a newbie. The nomination was a complete surprise, but a very pleasant one at that!

“It gave me an incredible sense of achievement and recognition. As a volunteer I’m happy to give up my time to be part of the triathlon experience and it’s nice to know that our contribution is valued.

“I’d highly recommend that you nominate someone for the 2020 Triathlon England Awards because just knowing someone in the triathlon world has appreciated you and the support you give them, brings a sense of accomplishment and acknowledgement for the work volunteers do.

“The majority of local events would struggle to take place without the army of volunteers that provide the support they do, so to have these regional and national awards really recognises the work they do behind the scenes, going above and beyond to help others.

“As a Technical Official, the suspension of triathlon activity has meant that there aren’t any events to officiate at. Just like athletes, we spend winter getting ready for the season, so it’s been frustrating not to be able to attend and officiate at events.

“Nevertheless, we’ve been working with events to help ahead of any lifting of restrictions so that they’re ready to go when it is possible to. So, even when it may not look like it, volunteers are still working hard to help the sport continue and grow.”

The 2020 Triathlon England Awards are now open for nomination and will close on Wednesday 2 September at 12 noon.

There are seven categories to nominate someone in: Club of the Year; Coach of the Year; Key Worker of the Year; Multisport Event of the Year; Volunteer of the Year; Virtual Activity of the Year; and Virtual Coach of the Year.
