Sprinters battle for National titles at Belvoir Castle this weekend

Published:

This weekend marks the second opportunity to bag a national title as Belvoir Castle makes way for the Triathlon England National Sprint Triathlon Championships.

Just Racing have organised Speedy Beaver Triathlon, which will take competitors round the Castle’s Leicestershire grounds and surrounding areas. The 750m swim will see triathlete’s battle through a horseshoe shaped reservoir, before facing a long run into T1.

Once on bike, the course travels a single lap of 21.9km beginning with a long straight, giving triathletes a chance to test their speed and power ahead. After a short climb, riders will be then taken through a twisting circuit before reaching the castle grounds.

Competitors will need to have left something in their legs as the final run stage will be a 5km hilly sprint to the finish.

As in previous years, there will be a large contingent representing both Oxford and Cambridge Universities, with the rivalry likely to help produce some interesting battles along the course.

Returning champions include Claire Vallance (W35-39). Clocking the third fastest female time in 2014 at hosts, Big Cow Triathlon, Claire will be looking to retain her title and improve on last year’s time of 1:08:26. Steve Mckeown (M45-49) will also be lining up again and will seek to go one better than the silver medal he picked up a year ago, when the North Herts Road Runner was pipped to the post by Andy Tarry.

Follow @TriEngland for updates on the race and look out for full results which will be posted as soon as possible following the event.
