Triathlon England: National Championship season continues at Grafham Water on Sunday 8 May.

Published:

Competitive racing in prospect as Sunday’s NiceTri Events Standard Distance Triathlon hosts the Triathlon England: National Championships in addition to the first 2016 qualifier for the ITU World Triathlon Championships in Cozumel, Mexico

Originally scheduled to take place in St. Neots, recent rain and a waterlogged field have seen this Championship event and qualifier relocate to nearby Grafham Water, Huntingdon; four miles north of the original site. The new venue will be a familiar one to many triathletes already and in two weeks time it will itself be hosting the British Middle Distance Triathlon Championships at the ‘Grafman’ event.

The Standard distance, non-drafting course will comprise of a 1.5km lake swim with a deep-water start, a fast out-and-back bike course completed by an out-and-back 10km run. Both the bike and run routes are part of the Middle distance Grafman course, and each of the disciplines comprises one lap.

The defending overall Triathlon England Champions from the 2015 edition at the Deva Triathlon, James Travers and Hannah Lord, will not be racing this weekend - but second overall last year, Alex Lawton, will. Alex went on to finish as first Age-Group athlete overall at the British Championships, Tri Liverpool, and is looking forward to kick-starting his championship season on Sunday – despite some of the recent weather:

“Seeing snow falling the week before your first proper race of the season doesn’t exactly give you that summertime racing vibe, but it’s no less exciting to be getting the season properly underway. Holding both the British and National titles would be a big honour, but I’m under no illusions that achieving it is going to be anything but a challenge.”

As well as Triathlon England: National Championship medals, the race will also provide the first opportunity of 2016 to secure qualification for the Cozumel ITU Standard Distance World Championships in Mexico this September. Automatic qualification places are available for the first three eligible athletes in each age group.

Athletes are reminded that to be eligible for consideration for qualification places at the NiceTri Standard Distance Triathlon, you must register your intent to qualify by 5pm on Friday 6 May 2016. For me details and how to register, visit here.

The new venue for the event is Grafham Water Visitor Centre, Marlow Park, Grafham, Huntingdon, PE28 0BH, with the first waves starts of the day at 07:50.
