Triathlon community extends condolences following Bala tragedy

Published:

Following the tragic death at the Bala Middle Distance Triathlon last weekend, British Triathlon, Welsh Triathlon and event organisers, Wrecsam Triathlon Club, wish to extend their condolences to family and friends of Daniel Cavanagh.

Daniel was a 40 year-old father, husband and school teacher from Birkenhead. His heart stopped after nine miles of the bike course. The event was cancelled following the incident, and Daniel was treated by emergency services at the scene, who were sadly unable to revive him.

The tragic loss of a participant in triathlon, a sport often seen as an exemplar in its ability to promote physical wellbeing and fitness, is always a shock to us all.

There have been very few fatalities in our sport, and we were extremely saddened to hear of a death at the Bala Middle Distance Triathlon. We would like to extend our thanks to the other competitors for their support and understanding during this difficult time.

A family fundraising page is available, here and the event prize fund is also being donated.
