Triathlon England Awards: Jacob Waterhouse

Published:

Nominated for his work organising and running four GO TRI Aquathlons at Chester Triathlon Club, Jacob was awarded Young Volunteer of the Year at the 2018 Triathlon England Awards.

We caught up with Jacob to hear from him what it meant to be an award winner at the Triathlon England Awards.

"Hi, my name’s Jacob, and I was awarded Triathlon England’s Young Volunteer of the Year for 2018. When I first heard that I’d been nominated, my first reaction was one of shock because I didn’t know that much about the Awards! To actually win the award was such a huge achievement for myself, the events team, and the whole of Chester Tri Club to be nominated and reflects all the hard work of everyone involved in the event.

I really want the Young Volunteer award to inspire young people particularly to get involved with volunteering. For those whose parents compete and normally just tag along to watch, I’d definitely recommend having a go at marshalling at the event - after all that’s where I started when I was 14. It’s a great experience; a great way to support others; and really good fun!

Having a successful and visible recognition scheme for volunteers, such as the Triathlon England Awards, is so important for recognising and rewarding people who put so much into the sport. There is a lot of time and effort that goes into organising events, running a club, delivering sessions, or whatever it may be; and to publicly recognise this otherwise unseen work is huge.

It takes a matter of minutes to make a nomination, so I’d proactively encourage you to nominate any volunteer who goes above and beyond for the sport. Nominating someone for a Triathlon England Award is a really simple process, but one that has such a huge impact on the individual nominated."

If you want to publicly recognise a volunteer who has helped you on your triathlon journey, nominate them for one of the 2019 Triathlon England Awards. There are 10 awards that volunteers can be nominated for:

  1. Young Volunteer of the Year
  2. Volunteer of the Year
  3. Technical Official of the Year
  4. Children’s Coach of the Year
  5. Participation Coach of the Year
  6. Children’s Event of the Year
  7. Club Event of the Year
  8. Commercial Event of the Year
  9. GO TRI Organiser of the Year
  10. Club of the Year
