2017 Competition Rules Update

Published:

From Monday 16 January 2017, the 2017 Competition Rules will come into effect, which can now be downloaded as a PDF. A summary of the changes can also be downloaded.

Why have we made changes?

Each year, the ITU (International Triathlon Union) review the rules of the sport as it continues to grow in popularity, and to keep up with the latest developments of the sport. British Triathlon reviews and adopts the necessary changes to maintain consistency with the ITU. Furthermore, we want to ensure all participants continue to take part in safe and enjoyable competition.

Howard Vine, British Triathlon Technical Committee Chair, said: “The new rules continue to support the development of triathlon and multisport in Britain, ensuring safe and fair competition for all taking part”

“After the rewrite of the British Triathlon rules and adoption of the ITU rules last year we have continued to follow the lead from the ITU and have adopted their updates where appropriate.”

Competition Rules Summary of changes 2017

So what's changed?

Following the large-scale overhaul of the Competition Rules in 2016, the changes this year are relatively minor. The biggest change this year comes in elite paratriathlon, with the addition of a sixth paratriathlon class. These changes will apply to any paratriathlete who wishes to take part in international competition, or the British Paraduathlon and Paratriathlon Championships – please contact the Paratriathlon or Events Teams for further information.

There are also changes to time penalties and clarification on a number of queries raised in the past twelve months. The full overview of changes can be viewed using the link above.

Who does this effect?

Put simply, anyone who takes part in a permitted event. All Home Nation permitted events adhere to the British Triathlon Competition Rules and are therefore an essential read for any newcomers to the sport who are taking up the triathlon challenge for the first time. It is also advisable that Event Organisers have a clear understanding of these rules.

Regular participants are also advised to download and review the rules, to ensure they are up to date with any changes. Age-Group competitors taking part in ITU and ETU championship events should familiarise themselves with the updated ITU Competition Rules which can be downloaded here.
