GO TRI Club Focus: Alnwick Tri Club

Published:

We caught up with Alnwick Tri Club from Northumberland, to find out what goes on behind the scenes of a GO TRI event.

What GO TRI events do you organise?

We organise three different types of events:

GO TRI Druridge Bay - duathlons, aquathlons, aquabikes and triathlons throughout the spring and summer.

GoTri Alnwick ladies only event (indoor gym based throughout winter)

GoTri Northumberland triathlons

We think we have every combination of multisport covered in our events but are always willing to listen to what competitors want and put events on accordingly.

Where are your events based?

Events are based in Northumberland. Druridge Bay Country Park is a fantastic setting that has a lake which the club trains in and a park run that started last year which utilises our long established run route for triathlons round the lake.

The winter ladies only GO TRI has been running for 9 years as a very small event designed to help motivate women of all ages try the sport in January, just as they are looking to do something for their New Year's resolution.

GoTri Northumberland is based at the Amble Health and Leisure Centre, allowing a pool based tri whilst the other segments of the tri are out on the beautiful links, just 15m from the beach.

How much do your GO TRI events cost?

We keep our costs low. Between £5 and £10 depending on the venue, looking to cover the costs of the event not necessarily make a profit. The ladies only GoTri this year made a small profit at £3 per competitor.

Alnwick Tri Club look at these events as the clubs way of giving back to the community, attracting people to short, friendly events that even have tea and cakes free to competitors at the end. Part of doing your first triathlon is learning about the social aspect of triathlon and where would we all be if we couldn't talk about our triumphs and disasters at the end of a race?

How do people enter?

As soon as an event is open for entry, a note goes on the Alnwick Tri website and Facebook site and we email all past participants. The link on the Facebook site always reaches 6-7 times the people who normally follow the page! On top of this it is listed on the GO TRI and Triathlon England events pages.

Entry is taken through www.entrycentral.com and there are no hidden admin or credit card fees to pay on top of your entry.

How many people have taken part in your GO TRI events?

We limit our events to a maximum of 50 people per event to keep it small and friendly. To date we have had over 400 different people complete in the events as GO TRI and Try-a-tri (which we held before GO TRI existed)

We genuinely have people of all levels competing at our GO TRI events as they are short enough to be used as a mid week hard training session or a first ever triathlon but competitors keep coming back and they are always keen to know when we will be hosting the next one.

How many volunteers does it take to run your events?

We aim for every event to need about 10 marshals but everyone in the club is keen to help out so we usually have way more than that giving competitors chance to chat, ask questions and generally be put at ease before the event.
